Gear Up

GEAR-UP is a national program of the U.S. Department of Education targeted to increase the number of minority and low-income youth who go on to college.

The first major district GEAR-UP grant in Ohio was awarded to the Canton city Schools in 1999.

Locally, Kent State University, the canton City Schools, YMCA, Project Wheelbarrow (a mentoring program), Heartbeats to the City, the Canton Urban League, and the Stark Education Partnership collaborate to make this project a reality for nearly 21,000 sixth and seventh graders.

The Partnership has established a fund that will grow to $450,000 to support college scholarships.
