Public Input Invited on Ohio's New Fine Arts Draft Model Curriculum

For the last two years, the Ohio

Department of Education (ODE) has been working with groups of educators to draft a new model fine arts curriculum. Now, it's the public's turn to comment. Through February 16th, interested persons can review the curriculum and offer input through an online survey[1] at the department's web site.

Model curricula help guide school districts and teachers in forming courses of study and lesson plans. The new Fine Arts Model Curriculum will be an important addition as the Ohio Core now requires that students, not enrolled in a Career Technical course of study, take two semesters of Fine Arts to graduate.

The draft curriculum builds on Ohio's revised Fine Arts standards, adopted in 2012. The 32 member ODE Committee for the Arts and Innovative Thinking [2] played an instrumental role in reviewing those standards. Stark County was well represented with both M. J. Albacete, Executive Director of the Canton Museum of Art and Gail Martino, Fine Arts Consultant for the Stark County Educational Service Center, serving as members.
