Fearing Growing Shortages in Computer Specialists, NSF Convenes National Meeting: Stark County Part of Discussion

Teen students on laptopThe National Science Foundation (NSF) convened over 400 computer scientists, researchers and educators in New Orleans this week to examine ways that computational thinking can be strengthed in the K-12 curriculum. Stark County was part of the discussion.

At stake is a pending shortage of computer specialists that may only see one-third of all available jobs filled by 2018.

SEP Vice-president Dr. Joe Rochford and Mike Bayer from the Stark County Educational Service Center were invited by NSF to attend.

In combating the shortage, Stark County has a decided edge over many regions in the country due to a growing number of dual credit computer courses now offered in its school districts.
