Math Tutors Support Average Students

My tutor covers new material, sometimes before we learn it in the classroom. This makes me feel good to know how to do the problems when the teacher first introduces the topic.
- Alliance student

An innovative pilot project to strengthen math skills of over 400 average 9th and 10th grade students is underway at McKinley, Timken and Alliance high schools. The 18 month strategy identifies students with average grades and provides them with additional support to build their skills and raise their grades. The goal is for students to enter college without the need for remedial math coursework.

The project, funded by a grant to the Stark Education Partnership by The Timken Foundation of Canton, was conceived as an outgrowth of the success of math tutoring provided by Jen Rair at Canton Early College High School. Jen serves through Stark State College as the advisor to the group of four tutors. She meets monthly with the tutors and provides best practices and problem solving strategies.

Employed by Stark State, the current math tutors are: Juliann Trevorrow (Alliance High School), Robert Altenhof and Bethany Baranyk (McKinley High School), and Aaron McCutchan (Timken High School).
