McKinley Adds Innovative AP

McKinley High School is one of 11 non-selective public schools in Ohio offering the AP Capstone Project. Fourteen self-selected students - one sophomore and thirteen juniors - are currently enrolled in the course, taught by distinguished teacher Manuel Halkias.

College Board describes this innovative college-level program as a complement to discipline-specific AP courses. Halkias participated in a training course last summer before the first offering of the AP Seminar Course last fall. "An urban district is a perfect place for this course," Halkias explained. "We are an intersection of diversity and heart with a wealth of different perspectives. The amazing work is relevant, challenging and develops informed discourse and conversation as students learn the processes for research, writing and presentation as they are done in college."

The project "combines scholarly practice with academic intensity" and includes two new courses: AP Seminar taken in grade 10 or 11 and AP Research.
  • AP Seminar includes assessment on: team project and presentation; individual research-based essay and presentation; and an end of course exam.
  • The AP Research course includes: research process documentation, an academic thesis paper; and presentation and oral defense.
AP Exams are scored on a 5-point scale. Students who earn scores of at least a 3 on both Capstone courses will earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Students who earn at least a 3 on the two Capstone course exams and at least a 3 on 4 additional AP Exams earn an AP Capstone Diploma.
