Gates Taps Stark State and Two Others to Lead Ohio Component of Major College Completion Initiative
Students in Classroom

Suzanne Walsh, Senior Program Officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, announced that Stark State College, along with Lorain and Sinclair Community Colleges, will form the Ohio Cadre of Completion by Design. [1]

Completion by Design is a major national initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation targeted at raising community college completion rates for low income students under age 26. The foundation plans to invest nearly $35 million in partner colleges across nine states within the next five years.

The three Ohio colleges will share in an initial first year planning grant of $500,000 to identify completion strategies to be followed by a two to three year implementation period. During the last year of the grant, the colleges will consider policy implications and how lessons learned can be scaled for national impact.
