New Census Report Details Stark County Businesses

Stark County has 784 accommodation and food services establishments, employing 14,383 persons. There are also 221 automotive repair and maintenance establishments in the county, generating an annual payroll of $28,240,000. These are but two classes of a total 9,259 local business establishments with an annual payroll of $4,938,093,000 - the seventh largest of any county in the state.

Information such as this can be a vital component in future planning for education and workforce development as communities work to sustain current, as well as grow new businesses.

These figures come from County Business Patterns: 2006, an annual report released on June 26th by the U.S. Census Bureau. The report contains data covering more than 7.6 million businesses with paid employees throughout the nation. Data can be accessed at the state, county and even zip code level.

County Business Patterns provides data on the number of establishments, number of employees, and quarterly and annual payroll for most of the 1,100 industries according to the North American Industry Classification (NAIC). Not included is data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees.

The series is useful for studying the economic activity of areas such as Stark County and can provide a basis for analyzing economic changes over time. County Business Patterns may be accessed at: http://www.census.gov/epcd/cbp/view/cbpview.html
