AmeriCorp Ohio College Guides to Continue work at Alliance, McKinley and Washington High Schools AmeriCorps Workers 2011/12

A new round of funding has insured that AmeriCorp Ohio College Guides will continue to assist principals, guidance counselors and staff on increasing college enrollment in Stark's urban districts.

Recent college graduates themselves, Guides draw upon their own experiences to employ a "near-peer" model in helping schools expand one-to-one advising services, particularly for students who might not otherwise go on to college.

This year's guides are:

  • Jeremy Duerr, a 2010 Malone University graduate, who will continue working on an MA in school counseling at Malone. Jeremy will serve at McKinley High School for a second year.
  • Kayla Johnson, a 2010 Tiffin University graduate in forensic psychology, also returns for her second year to work with Alliance students and families.
  • Rachel Kircher, a 2011 graduate of the University of Akron, will be working on her MA in school counseling at Walsh University while serving at Washington High School.

Guides receive stipends through the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and a grant to support their further college studies. Funding is also provided by the Stark Education Partnership with a grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation. The Ohio College Access Network and the school districts provide support to implement the program.
