New Study Cites the Value of Certificates as a Gateway to Gainful Employment and College Degrees

Certificates ReportOften overlooked in discussions of education attainment, academic certificates earned in college classrooms are beginning to emerge as an important component in developing a well-qualified workforce.

A new study by Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce has found that 18 percent of prime-age workers, 23 to 65, have obtained such certificates.

Further the study, Certificates: Gateway To Gainful Employment and College Degrees,[1] also notes that one-third of certificate holders now have an Associate, Bachelor's or graduate degree. A primary finding is that holding a certificate in one's field of work adds a substantial earnings premium, regardless of existing credential.

In 2010, the latest year figures are available, Ohio's public higher education institutions awarded 8,068 certificates, up 21% from 2009. Over one-quarter were awarded in health care. Business and engineering ranked second and third.[2]
