Participation in Dual Credit Three Times the Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program

Dual credit courses greatly expanded the opportunity for Stark and Wayne County students to earn college credit while in high school.

Over three times as many students enrolled in high school based dual credit courses during the 2008-09 academic year than participated in the previous year's Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO). These findings come from a study on the growth of dual credit recently conducted by the Stark Education Partnership for the Stark County Educational Service Center.*

PSEO-vs-Dual Credit in Stark & WaynePrior to the introduction of dual credit courses, taught by teachers who qualify as college adjuncts, the primary way for students to earn college credit while in high school has been the state's PSEO program. While the law for 20 years, no more than 5% of all Ohio students have ever participated in PSEO.

Under PSEO, students would leave high schools and attend classes on a college campus. Under dual credit, students remain at their high schools.

Stark, along with neighboring Wayne County, has built the largest dual credit program in the state over the last three years. All Stark County districts will offer dual credit courses for 2009-10.
