Taking Advanced Placement (AP) Courses Alone Not Related to College Success; Passing AP Exams is What Matters

A new Issue Brief by ACT, Inc. looks at research conducted by the National Center for Educational Achievement that indicates there is no evidence that merely taking an Advanced Placement (AP) course is related to college success.

However, passing the corresponding AP exam, given at the end of the course is related to college graduation rates. Students pass AP exams with a score of three or higher (3+), the level at which many colleges and universities will grant credit for the exam on admission.

The Issue Brief, The Advanced Placement Program Benefits Mainly Well-Prepared Students Who Pass AP Exams [1] notes that by passing the test these students have demonstrated that they are ready for college.

Stark County students exceed both the state and national average in passing AP exams at 3+. [2]
