The Board of Directors of Stark Education Partnership, Inc. is pleased to announce that Dr. John J. McGrath, President of Stark State College of Technology was appointed to the Board at their regular meeting on November 14. 2001. "We are very pleased to have John McGrath join us and share his expertise as we work toward building a P-16 initiative", said Board Chair, W. Don Reader.
Dr. McGrath joins a distinguished group of Stark County citizens who have demonstrated a lasting commitment to working in collaboration with school districts to improve education for all students in the county. His extensive background complements the wide-range of knowledge and interests of current Board members. He will bring to the Board the added dimension of extensive experience in the areas of higher education and community collaboration.
The Stark Education Partnership, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by four foundations (Deuble, Hoover, Stark Community and Timken). The Partnership serves as a catalyst for school change and a supporter of school-based initiatives to improve the education outcomes for all children, pre-school age through twelfth grade in Stark County. The Partnership was created to serve as a vehicle to promote county-wide collaborative efforts in this behalf.

Milligan, Howes, Godshall, Daane, Milligan and Kyhos LLP and Ward J. Timken, The Timken Foundation.
Dr. John J. McGrath assumed the Presidency of Stark State College of Technology on March 1, 1983. He came to the Stark County area from Fremont, Ohio, where he was Dean of Instruction at Terra Community College from 1978 to 1983.
Dr. McGrath's educational background includes having earned a B.S. in Industrial Management from the University of Detroit; an M.B.A. from Wayne State University; and an Ed. D. in Higher Education from Wayne State. He also attended the Institute for Educational Management (I.E.M.) at Harvard University.
Dr. McGrath has worked in education for over 30 years and has served in both teaching and administrative posts at Highland Park College, Monroe Community College in Michigan, and Terra Community College in Fremont, Ohio. He also has industrial work experience as a Corporate Industrial Engineer with the Chrysler Corporation.
He has successfully worked with legislative and business leaders to secure funding for various capital projects at Stark State College including the Engineering Technologies Center, the Student Service Center, a fire tower, and college facility renovations. The construction of the Advanced Technology Center. a $6 million joint venture between Stark State College and Diebold was completed in 1994. A successful fund-raising campaign from area business and industry to equip the labs in the Center was realized totaling $2.3 million. The newly constructed Science Building, dedicated in September 1998, houses dental hygiene labs as well as the new Dental Hygiene Clinic which provides low-cost dental hygiene services to the public. In addition, Dr. McGrath has developed and worked with advisory committees at Stark State to plan occupational programs in the health, science, business, and industrial technology areas.
Dr. McGrath has been appointed to and currently serves on several local, state, and national organizations. Dr. McGrath is currently serving as chairman of the Stark Development Board and is serving as co-chair of the State College Tech Prep Advisory Committee. He is a member and past officer of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges; is a member of the Higher Education Funding Commission; is a past national president of the American Technical Education Association; is a past president of the Ohio College Association; and a former member of the Leadership Stark County Board of Trustees. Dr. McGrath is chairman of the Workforce Investment Board Strategic Planning Committee for Stark and Tuscarawas Counties and is a member of the Ohio Steel Council.
He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, a vice president of the Board of Trustees of the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce, as well as a past president of the United Way of Central Stark County. John McGrath is active in the Boy Scouts, and is a past president of the Buckeye Council. He served as a consultant/evaluator for the North Central Association for over eight years. He is past president of the Canton Chapter of Legatus, a national Catholic organization of CEOs.
Dr. McGrath has been the recipient of several awards. The Ohio Technical and Community College Association presented him with a plaque for his excellent leadership during his term as president. He received two individual awards from the Boy Scouts: the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth, and the Bronze Big Horn Award from the Exploring Division for recognition to high school youth. An additional honor bestowed upon Dr. McGrath was a feature article in the Weekly Business Section of The Repository in July 1993 which highlighted the College and President McGrath for outstanding contributions to the business community. He was also honored by United Way for his outstanding leadership during his tenure. In 1999, Dr. McGrath was the recipient of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year Award. In 2001, he received the National Outstanding Service Award from the American Technical Education Association. In addition, John McGrath was named the 1994-1995 Legatus Officer of the Year at the organization's annual national conference. The award recognized Dr. McGrath's efforts in both the local and national organization for excellence, generosity, and creativity.
